FundMyRober FAQ:
This post is mostly to address some possible questions people might have about this whole thing. If you have additional questions, or remarks, feel free to reach out to me personally on twitter or through this game's community forum!
Anyways, onto the questions:
Why did you decide to do this?
The short answer is: I'm poor and making games, even small ones, is expensive. The immediate things I need money for, are Steam's submission fee ($100) and I would also like to commission someone to do some promo/store art for the game.
If I'm very frugal and take a few months to save up some money, I can pay for this stuff myself, but that would be cutting it really close, when it comes things like food, and I would also have to rely on nothing in my life breaking, or falling apart in the meantime, because that would immediately eat into whatever money I saved up. So this is an attempt at alleviating at least some of that pressure.
Why $20 for this? It seems expensive!
I deliberately picked a higher price for this, mostly for these reasons:
- I don't have a lot of reach and no matter the price, the amount of people that would end up buying this, isn't going to be high. So in the interest of getting an amount of money out of this, that will make a substantial difference (one sold copy basically pays for 20% of Steam's submission fee), I felt like $20 is a good amount.
- I would feel uncomfortable taking money off of people, that don't have much themselves right now. Times are hard and game development is very chaotic and since I'm partially selling you on the promise that this will exist at some day, I only really want money from people, who can safely afford to pay for it.
- The final game will be much, much cheaper (I'm thinking about $5 right now), so this package is really just meant for folks who have the money, and for whatever reason, want to help me get this out quicker and without me having to be completely broke for most of 2021 (I'm always kind of broke, even in the best of times).
Why is this limited to 20 copies?
Because that's the maximum amount of money that I feel comfortable with? I also don't expect to sell nearly that number anyways. This isn't meant to be some kind of big crowdfunding drive. It's only meant for me to get some extra money, to make working on this game a bit easier, nothing more.
What guarantee do I have, that you will actually finish this game?
There is none. Game development is hard and I have ADHD and therefore sometimes struggle with staying with longer projects. But I also haven't felt that confident in something since I worked on Splinter Zone and I did manage to release that game. The other thing that gives me confidence is that most of the actual content of the game is already finished. All the levels are done, almost all of the bossfights are done, most of the music is finished. All in all I'm about as far into making this game, as I was in early 2017, when I was working on Splinter Zone, and that game got released in June of that year. Now I'm not saying that it'll be June again, also because I want to give myself a bit more time for doing PR and stuff, but unless something unexpected happens, I feel like this is doable for me.
